The full Cordillera Huayhuash trek is the classic route of the region, It is rated as difficult level because daily there are climbing at an altitude of 4,650 m. to 5,000 m. but each stage is short (from 12 to 15 kilometers, from 4 to 7 hours trekking) and you will get good acclimatation. It is not a race against the clock, on the contrary we will have time to see this wonderful landscape, flowers (there are a lot, in all the year) and birds. The donkeys will carry all our luggage. It is our preferred hike!

Begins with a very early departure from Huaraz. We first drive to the town of Chiquian, then continue on dirt roads to Llamac, at 3300 meters (10,800 feet). Not many years ago, the trek started in Chiquian, and was a couple days longer as a result. But with recent mining activity, the road has been extended to this once remote settlement. the trail climbs gently up the Rio Llamac and in about 15 kilometers reaches camp, at about 4185 meters (13,700 feet).
The following morning we have an early climb over the pass of Cacanapunta, 4685 meters (15,400 feet). This pass marks the South American Continental Divide with streams on the east side flowing to the Amazon and the Atlantic Ocean, and those on the west to the Pacific.
After the crossing, we turn south, towards the main chain of the Huayhuash to reach camp at Laguna Mitococha, 4230 meters (13,900 feet). This lake is fed by the glaciers flowing off the north side of towering Jirishanca, one of the most awesome peaks in the range.
On day 4 we backtrack slightly to the north before curving back east then south to cross the Carhuac pass at about 4650 meters (15,250 feet). The trail then leads gently downhill south to Laguna Carhuacocha. We camp near the lake at about 4140 meters (13,600 feet).
We have planned a rest day at Carhuacocha. The reason has more to do with the opportunity to do a day hike to the three beautiful lakes above, Lagunas Ganrajanca, Siula, and Quesilococha. These lakes lie at the foot of the immense east faces of Yerupaja and Siula Grande. We return to camp at Carhuacocha for the night.
This day, we continue our southward journey, over the pass of Punta Carnicero at 4600 meters (15,100 feet). Once over the pass the trail descends gently, passing several lakes to our camp at Huayhuash, a tiny settlement at about 4330 meters (14,200 feet).
We climb to the pass Portachuelo de Huayhuash (4750m). We skirt around the large lake Laguna Viconga before walking up the valley ½ hour to set up camp (4480m) 6½ hours. There are some hot springs near Viconga – maybe have a hot bath!
We head to the highest pass, Cuyoc 5000m / 16 4040 ft, we get there after of 3 hours, this pass is located between Cuyoc and Pumarinri mounts, from this point we have nice views of Cordillera Raura and part of Cordillera Huayhuash too. From the pass we descend to Guanacpatay valley and we set our campsite at 4400 m / 14 436 ft, after to have walked down around 1.5 hours.
After breakfast we depart for San Antonio, a viewpoint located at 4850m / 15 912 ft, we get to that point after of 2.5 hours, this point is unique, because from there we have the nicest views of Carnicero, Jurao, Siula Grande and Yerupaja mounts as well as Jurao and Siulacocha lakes. After resting and having taken the photos, we go down to Cutatambo valley 4250m / 13 944 ft, our next campsite where we get there after of 2 hours more.
We have scheduled in a second “rest” day, this one to allow time to visit the upper lakes of the Quebrada Sarapococha. We can also hike to the base camp of Siula Grande, home of Joe Simpson’s “Touching the Void” saga. We return to camp in the Rio Calinca.
Follow the calinca valley we go down to huayllapa village long the way we will see typical vestments of the local people then we climb up to huatiac camp it take 6 - 7 hours.. is a long one, with about 17 km of trail to cover.
We cross the Punta Tapush Pass and travel only a short way to camp near Laguna Susucocha. This day we going to have easy walk to cashpapamapa camp Aprox. 3 hours.
In the morning go down for 45 nimutes and then go up to yaucha pass (4800m) before descending to thespectacular Laguna Jahuacocha (4100m). On the way there is dramatic rock scenery and we should have magnificent views of the surrounding peaks of Rondoy, Jirishanca and Yerupaja, highest peak in the Huayhuash. People who going to climb to Diablo Mudo Have to leave aprox. 3:00 am. after the summit they have to go down for huacrish valley to jahuacocha.
We have scheduled in another rest day, this one with the possibility of climbing up to Laguna Solteracocha, or perhaps even higher for amazing views of Jirishanca and Rondoy. We camp again at Jahuacocha.
On our last day, we start early, climb up and west, out of the river bottom on a long rising traverse to round the ridge at a high point of about 4300 meters (14,100 feet). Once past this obstacle, we turn north, eventually descending to Llamac at 3300 meters. Our private vehicle will be waiting for us for the trip back to Huaraz.
